Transportation Alternatives Statement After Delivery Worker Killed in Crash with Truck in Illegal Loading Zone
13 Delivery Workers Have Been Killed in 2021
NEW YORK — On Monday evening, Salvador Navarette-Flores, 31, was killed in a crash with an illegally-parked FreshDirect truck on First Avenue and 76th Street in Manhattan.
2021 remains on track to be the deadliest year for traffic violence under Mayor de Blasio. 252 people have been killed in crashes since the year began.
Statement from Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Danny Harris:
“On behalf of Transportation Alternatives, we send our condolences to the loved ones of Salvador Navarette-Flores, who was killed in a collision with an illegally-parked FreshDirect truck. We stand with Los Deliveristas Unidos in the fight for safe streets for all, including our city’s essential delivery workers.
On our streets, safety must come first. With more and more deliveries taking place across New York City, we need the City to fast track dedicated loading zones, as advanced by Intro 2279, to ensure that delivery operators stop turning our sidewalks, bike lanes, bus lanes, and car lanes into parking and delivery hubs. Under NYC 25x25, we can use existing curb space reserved for car storage to enable safe deliveries.
We look forward to working with Mayor-elect Adams and the next City Council to prioritize the safety of our most vulnerable street users, including essential delivery workers, over the movement and storage of vehicles.”
