Intro 417 Passes, Third and Tenth Avenue Upgrades, and Sammy's Law
Our 50th year has been a busy one. Whether it was celebrating the 50th anniversary block party in Jackson Heights or cutting the ribbon on a new network of protected bike lanes in Long Island City, we’ve been organizing across our city to build a better, safer, and more resilient New York.
Our shared victories are a testament to the tireless work of activists like YOU. Together, we’ve achieved so much, including the passage of Intro 417. Another important victory!
Previously, the law singled out bike lane projects with unnecessary obstacles that other major street projects did not face. Thanks to legislation passed by the City Council this month, bike lanes will now be treated the same as other major street projects. Intro 417 passed overwhelmingly and removed these barriers, enabling construction to start just 14 days after DOT notifies elected officials and community boards.
Intro 417 is a huge win for New Yorkers. By streamlining bike lane project timelines, New York City can build bike lanes quicker and create the fully-protected network that New Yorkers in all five boroughs need.

These lanes create a comfortable and safer cycling experience, with wider lanes for passing and side-by-side riding.
