Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets Statements Congratulating Mayor-Elect Eric Adams

NEW YORK — In response to Eric Adams’ projected victory in the New York City mayoral election, Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets released the following statements:

Statement from Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Danny Harris:

“New York City is getting a mayor who bikes and who has a visionary plan for our streets. On behalf of Transportation Alternatives, we congratulate Eric Adams on his projected victory in the mayoral race. Mayor-elect Adams is a regular cyclist and knows firsthand the challenges facing our streets. He knows what must be done to turn asphalt into an asset and bring equitable, safe, and healthy transportation options to all New Yorkers.”

“We are thrilled that Mayor-elect Adams has throughout his campaign supported NYC 25x25 – our challenge, endorsed by over 200 local groups, urging New York’s next leaders to reclaim 25 percent of space for cars and give it back to people by 2025. As our city’s next mayor, Eric Adams can make NYC 25x25 a reality by expanding busways, protected bike lanes, and pedestrian space across all five boroughs. He can make 25x25 a reality by investing in permanent Open Street infrastructure. He can make 25x25 a reality by repealing the racist legacy of Robert Moses and investing in parks and public space.”

“Mayor-elect Adams has been a close partner to Transportation Alternatives for years and an ally in the fight for safe streets – especially in lower-income neighborhoods and communities of color. We look forward to building upon our long partnership and working together to make New York City a healthier, greener, and more equitable place for all.”

Statement from Amy Cohen, Co-Founder of Families for Safe Streets and mother of Sammy Cohen Eckstein, killed by a reckless driver in Park Slope in 2013:

“Every day, our members have to face the grim reality that more than seven years since Vision Zero was launched, 2021 will be the deadliest year for traffic violence since 2014. New leadership is needed now to save lives. Mayor-elect Eric Adams is a longtime advocate for safe streets – including for life-saving speed safety cameras and protected bike lanes – and his experience can get Vision Zero working again.”

“On behalf of Families for Safe Streets members, we congratulate our friend and longtime partner Eric Adams on becoming New York City’s next mayor. Mayor-elect Adams has stood with our members at countless vigils during the most painful days of their lives. He has hosted our annual World Day of Remembrance event. Eric Adams understands the devastation of traffic violence and what is needed to end it.”

“Traffic violence is a public health crisis and we have the tools to prevent it – we just need our leaders to act. We look forward to working with our next mayor Eric Adams to scale proven Vision Zero measures across the city to ensure no more families have to endure the anguish of losing a loved one in a crash on an unsafe street.”
