Transportation Alternatives Applauds City Council Leaders For $3.1 Billion Budget Commitment to Fund NYC Streets Plan, Highlights How Plan Will Help Achieve Transportation Equity

NEW YORK — In response to the New York City Council committing $3.1 billion to the NYC Streets Plan in its FY23 Budget Response, Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Danny Harris released the following statement:

“The NYC Streets Plan is key to achieving transportation equity. The Streets Plan is how New York City will ensure faster commutes, fewer transit deserts, and greater economic opportunity in communities across the five boroughs. Last month, more than 60 organizations joined together and urged our leaders to ensure the plan is fully funded for the first year. We thank Speaker Adrienne Adams, Finance Chair Justin Brannan, and Transportation and Infrastructure Chair Selvena Brooks-Powers for their vital leadership in committing $3.1 billion to support the Streets Plan in the years to come.” 

“We are particularly excited that this funding will go toward ensuring that all New Yorkers live within a quarter-mile of a protected bike lane and a quarter-mile of a dedicated bus lane — goals shared in our NYC 25x25 vision. Investing in these projects will particularly support under-resourced communities that for too long have been left behind when it comes to building safe, accessible, and healthy streets. For the sake of our climate and so much more, New Yorkers need the benefits of the Streets Plan to have reliable and affordable options that allow them to shift their trips currently completed in cars.”

“We will continue to partner with our advocacy and government partners to ensure this commitment by Council leadership is included in Mayor Adams’ upcoming budget.”
