Transportation Alternatives Statement After NYS Senate Passes 24/7 Speed Safety Camera Authorization
24/7 speed safety camera bill passes NYS Senate overwhelmingly 52-11
With passage, speed safety cameras would more than double their hours of operation — protecting New York City streets 24/7
ALBANY, NY — As New York City faces alarming traffic violence, advocates applauded as the NYS Senate today passed S5602B 52-11, sponsored by Sen. Andrew Gounardes, to reauthorize New York City’s life-saving speed safety camera program without any restrictions on the times and dates of operation — more than doubling the program’s hours of operation.
Last week, the New York City Council overwhelmingly passed a message of “home rule” in support of 24/7 speed safety cameras. Cameras are currently limited to operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, despite nearly 60 percent of traffic fatalities occurring while the cameras are off.
Statement from Danny Harris, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:
“The evidence is clear: When New York City’s speed safety cameras turn off, speeding increases and crashes rise. With increasing traffic violence across the city, our leaders need to use every possible tool to keep New Yorkers safe — from redesigning dangerous streets to 24/7 speed safety cameras. We applaud the New York State Senate on today’s vote reauthorizing and expanding New York City’s speed safety camera program and we urge the Assembly to pass this bill and send it to Governor Hochul’s desk without delay.”
