Build a Network of Protected Bike Lanes

Build a Citywide Network of Protected Bike Lanes

We are calling on Mayor Adams and our City Council members to quickly build a citywide network of protected bike lanes that serves all New Yorkers

Our streets are still unsafe for people who ride bikes. Yet, by choice or necessity, more New Yorkers are biking than ever. Our current crisis demands expanded transportation options so that all New Yorkers can get around as our city reopens — and bicycling must be one of those options.

We believe that every New Yorker should have access to this healthy and affordable form of transportation. To make cycling accessible, every New Yorker needs a protected bike lane within a quarter-mile of their home, no matter which neighborhood they live in.

The benefits of protected bike lanes are well-known. New York City's existing protected bike lanes have been shown to reduce congestion, speeding, cycling on the sidewalk, and injuries for all users of the road. By encouraging more people to bike, protected bike lanes reduce car trips and improve air quality and public safety. Protected bike lanes also encourage those who may not otherwise feel comfortable cycling in the city. A recent TA study of bike lanes in Manhattan found twice as many women preferring protected bike lanes over unprotected ones.

The ability to safely move around our city is a basic right that all New Yorkers deserve. Send a message to your elected officials to join our demand for a network of protected bike lanes in all our neighborhoods.
