Tell the Mayor: It’s Time to Invest in Safe, Secure Bike Parking

It's Time to Invest in Safe, Secure Bike Parking

New York City desperately needs more bicycle parking. The lack of bike parking in our city is far from a minor inconvenience — the shortfall contributes to rampant bike theft, disincentivizes biking relative to other modes of transportation, and perpetuates transit inequalities.

A 2020 TA report quantified the failure of the City to invest in bike parking. While there are 1.5 parking spaces for every car registered in NYC, there is only one bicycle parking space for every 116 bikes. It's no wonder that 95 percent of NYC cyclists say that more bike parking should be a priority. In the last eight years, our city's leadership has made and broken 11 separate promises to increase the availability of bike parking. This inaction disproportionately impacts Black and brown New Yorkers, who are more likely to rely on a bike as a primary method of transportation.

The mayoral administration must take immediate action to make bike parking more accessible to all New Yorkers by:

  • Prioritizing the installation of a variety of bike parking options in every neighborhood, starting where other transportation options are the most limited and the the need is greatest;
  • Repurposing street space used for free car parking to parking for bikes (converting one car parking spot into bike parking generates 3.6 times more spending at local businesses);
  • Embrace innovative options like secure bike parking cages at transit hubs and partnerships with private bike parking businesses.

Add your voice to demand Mayor Adams fill this much-needed gap in our transportation infrastructure.
